Cows' milk can protect against asthma

|

asthmaChildren who start drinking fresh milk from the farm early on are less likely to develop allergies when they are of school age, according to Swiss scientists.

But why more people are suffering allergies remains unclear, say researchers at Basel University, who have begun a study involving more than 14,000 children.

Cows' milk as food for infants has a bad reputation. From a nutritional perspective it does not fulfil the dietary requirements of babies, and children who are fed only cows' milk for too long often suffer an iron deficiency.

Majority of doctors 'missing milk allergy in babies'

|

milk bottle The majority of family doctors are missing cows' milk allergy in babies despite it causing serious health problems, claims a new survey.

Four in five GPs are failing to make a correct diagnosis and even when they do spot it, more than half are wrongly recommending soy-based milk instead - which can pose a risk to long-term health.

The survey of doctors found most don't trust their own colleagues to make the correct diagnosis of cows' milk allergy - the most common allergic condition.

cow milkMost young children who develop an allergy to cow's milk eventually "outgrow" it within a few years. Experiencing respiratory symptoms with the allergy, however — such as wheezing or runny nose — strongly predicts the likelihood that the allergy will persist considerably longer into childhood. That was the finding of a study presented here at the 52nd annual scientific meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

"We have known for a long time that food allergies can cause respiratory effects," said researcher Alessandro Fiochi, MD, from the University of Milan Medical School in Italy. "This is the first study that shows these symptoms can actually predict which children are most likely to have a longer-lasting problem with cow's milk allergy."

In the whirlwind of activities that makes up the life of a 4-year-old boy, something flashes on Luke Babin's arm.

A medical alert bracelet proclaims that he's a little different from other boys who play soccer and watch Curious George.

"I'm allergic to dairy," Luke explains.

Luke is one of about 12 million Americans who suffer from some food allergy, and the numbers are growing.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--General Mills is voluntarily recalling 13-ounce boxes of Golden Grahams cereal produced on certain dates because of a product labeling issue. The product produced on the dates being recalled may contain milk, a potential allergen, though “milk” is not listed as an ingredient.

There has been one report of an allergic reaction associated with this product.

Consumers allergic to milk or milk products, or who are unsure of whether they are allergic to milk or milk products, should not consume product bearing the affected code dates and should contact General Mills for a full refund.

Food Allergies An American Obsession?

|

Food allergies are increasingly top-of-mind for many Americans. In fact, one out of every three people in this country claim to have a food allergy of one kind or another. But the science doesn't support these fears. Government and medical association estimates put the actual incident rate at only between one in 25 and one in 70.

Parents are one of the groups most concerned about food allergies, especially as kids go back to school and eat more meals away from home. In many cases, they're also ill-informed about the differences between allergies and intolerances, and the proper course of treatment for each. A new survey conducted among California parents last month reveals that many are self-diagnosing food allergies and eliminating nutrient-rich foods from their child's diet without seeing a doctor first.
